My Approach to Writing a Motivation Letter (MOL) or Statement of Purpose (SOP)
A Motivation Letter (MOL) or Statement of Purpose (SOP) is one of the most frequently requested documents when applying for admission or scholarships. In many cases, it’s the most important part of the application, potentially awarding you a scholarship or admission as many applicants may have similar profiles in terms of grades, LOR, and extracurricular activities.
I had the pleasure to apply and be awarded a prestigious scholarship from Universität Hamburg for their Master's program in British and American Cultures: Texts and Media. I thought to share my personal experience in writing a SOP. Here, I’ll discuss my SOP and the mindset I had while writing it.
- Important Note: See, a motivation letter should always be your thing. My motivation letter reflects me as an applicant, highlighting the points most important to me to show the admission committee that I am the best fit for the program. These points may not apply to you. Please read this guide as an example of a SOP, but don’t copy it line by line as that will only reduce your chances of acceptance.
